The Diversity & Inclusion committee has identified several upcoming opportunities we’d like to share!
Black History Month 2023
- The Alaska Black Caucus is celebrating Black History Month with events and community conversations, including the Bettye Davis African American Summit on Health & Equity. Details HERE.
- Experience a live wax museum of black historical figures at the Loussac Library. Anchorage youth will lead a presentation dedicated to these influential figures on Feb. 11 from 2-4 p.m. The event is hosted by the Anchorage chapter of Jack and Jill of America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to investing in the futures of African American youth. Details HERE.
- The Black Awareness Association of Juneau hosts a weekly radio program on KTOO that aims to “bridge the gap in our understanding about the biggest race and social justice issues of our times.” You can listen to Culture Rich Conversations (this month and beyond) HERE.
Awareness of Implicit Bias
Implicit bias refers to unconscious attitudes, reactions, stereotypes, and categories that affect behavior and understanding. Self-assessment and reflection on implicit bias help to create awareness which can lead to a more inclusive work environment. You can take a self-assessment through Project Implicit from Harvard University. Details HERE.
We Want Your Feedback
The committee is developing a survey to better understand how we can work together to advance diversity, equity and inclusion within our chapter. Please watch for details in the March newsletter!
