Letter from the President

Feb 3, 2017 | News

We enter 2017 with much to celebrate. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Alaska chapter which was founded in 1976 by Bruce Pozzi with just ten members. Today we have grown to more than 200 — a testament to how much the public relations profession has grown in Alaska and the many benefits we provide our members.

While we have much to celebrate, we also face some challenges. Many of our members and the organizations we work for are feeling the impacts of the state’s budget crisis. The national election has caused some to call in to question the trustworthiness of the news media and public relations profession. Terms like fake news and alternative facts have become part of our vernacular, filling up our communications channels and social media platforms.

What does all of this mean to us as public relations practitioners?  It means it has never been more important for PR practitioners to adhere to PRSA Code of Ethics, the foundational principals of our profession. We must continue to keep ethical decision-making a core value and counsel our clients, CEOs and colleagues to do the same. We must also continue to support diversity and inclusion in our chapter and the organizations we work for. With this in mind, the Alaska chapter will be placing an emphasis on both ethics and diversity throughout the year.

What can you do as a PR practitioner? Familiarize yourself with the code. Be a trusted adviser. Lead by example. Get involved. Whether it’s volunteering for a committee, serving on the board or becoming an advocate for the profession within your own organization.

I am proud to lead the chapter during our 40-year anniversary and to be working with all of you throughout what promises to be an exciting year!

Warmly,

Michelle Renfrew, APR
