Anchorage: Ethical values in the face of whistleblower reprisal

2015’s PRSA PR Professional of the Year will share her story

What would you do if suddenly after 20 years, a new boss accuses of you misconduct and immediately removes you from your long-standing job as PR director, reassigning you as a clerk in a basement library?

For Department of Veterans Affairs Public Affairs Officer Paula Pedene, APR, Fellow PRSA, it meant taking a stand for ethics in what some have called, “A Modern Day Tale of David VS Goliath.”

Pedene was a Department of Veterans Affairs whistleblower in 2010 and felt that her demotion in 2012 was one of whistleblower reprisal. She decided to fight, but it meant she would have to wait, hire a legal team, battle depression, and endure several Department of Veterans Affairs investigations against her, which eventually would reveal the manager’s maneuver was indeed whistleblower reprisal.

Although she didn’t know it at the time, the ordeal would lead to current day activities of what is known as the “VA Wait Time Scandal.”

Pedene will join us at our September luncheon to share her inside story of moral, ethics and courage which eventually earned her top honors as the 2015 PRSA PR Professional of the Year.

Speaker accommodations generously donated by the Crowne Plaza Anchorage Midtown Hotel.
